ECD - Pre School - Grade R
<< Back
Project Status:
Completed
Project Number: 75
Project Scope:
To upgrade the early childhood development sector in RBN by December 2010.

The ECD project was started following concerns that children enter Grade R without adequate preparation. The ECD sector is grossly unregulated in the Bafokeng area and seemingly does not cater for the educational needs of young children. The aim of this project is hence to ensure that every 2-5 years old child in a Bafokeng Early Learning Centre (ELC) receives a holistic preparation for entry to Grade R at Primary school.
The project charter will entail a strategy to establish systems and structures through training caregivers and parents committees, ensuring that all centres are registered and comply with accepted international ECD norms and standards. The RBI intends to create empowered and responsible communities who take ownership of the education of their children. This is in line with developing problem solving and sustainable communities outlined in vision 2020.

Research shows that providing quality Early Childhood Development delivery play a vital role in the holistic development of young children; i.e. cognitive, physical, emotional moral and spiritual development. Children in the Bafokeng Nation have been extraordinarily disadvantaged because the ECD sector, in all RBN villages has not been regulated and and has been dysfunctional for a long period of time. This means that:
? Almost all caregivers are not ECD trained, and hence lack knowledge of ECD practices;
? Caregivers have no knowledge of ECD policies;
? No stimulation equipment is provided to the children;
? Children are provide with poor nutrition;
? There is a lack of hygiene and safety standards in the preschools;
? There is poor management of centres;
? There is no involvement of parents, communities, leadership and government.
RBI?s ECD project will add value to RBN children by educating and supporting the RBN communities in their role as stewards and custodians of their children?s education ;get involved; take action; and take ownership  in the running of the centres and education of their children in line with the Morafe?s vision 2020. In particular, the project will benefit the following groups:
? RBN Community/Parents
? Government
? Caregivers
? Children
? Primary Schools
? ELC?s
