Project Scope:

To implement a Numeracy programme in Primary Schools in RBN by 30 November 2009.

According to research done by various studies, including TIMSS, the Mathematics knowledge of our primary school learners, when benchmarked nationally or internationally, is very low.  Visits to schools, consultations with intermediate phase educators and observation and monitoring in Bafokeng primary schools have confirmed this.  After some investigation it has become clear that, notwithstanding the other challenges like large classes, etc., educators are not equipped to address this problem and delivery is not changing or improving.  In order to address the problem of Mathematics education we need to start with our educators, up-scaling and capacitating them to deliver to quality Mathematics education, only then can learners start to improve.  During the Intermediate Phase the solid foundation of many concepts are laid down, on which high school Mathematics rests.  Thus this is a very important phase to address this problem in, as damage done in this phase can seldom be rectified in the middle and high school, and would seriously restrict learners' future prospects. 

In order to address a problem of this magnitude, we will have to capacitate educators to assist us in the up-scaling of fellow educators, to facilitate this a mentorship programme will be instituted in 2010 with a few educators from the Phokeng area.

All the Primary schools in the Royal Bafokeng Nation deliver mathematics education and learning of superior standards. Educators are equipped with mathematical materials and content knowledge, as well as pedagogical skills to enable the leaners to be proficient in mathematical concepts and problem solver and thinker when completing the Primary phase
