Programme Executive Summary (Scope):
|
The performance of our learners in mathematics continues to be a national concern. Whether it is the results in the Annual National Assessment or in matric. The message is clear. The present system is failing our children.
The Global Competitiveness Report 2013-2014 by The World Economic Forum ranked South Africa 148/148 in quality of mathematics and science education. South Africa is ranked 146/148 in quality of educational system. The message is there for all to see. The South African educational system is broken.
Different initiatives or interventions are needed.
Short term (stop the bleeding) and long term (sustainable) initiatives are required.
Short term means assisting the learners to improve their performance in mathematics.
Long term means improving the quality of teaching in our schools.
The short term improvement will be achieved by:
Opening a Maths Centre in Phokeng.
Assisting at the DoE's weekly Gr 8 and 9 mathematics initiative of 1 + 4.
The long term improvement will be achieved by:
Exposing young, energetic and competent learners to the joy of mathematics and hence build a pipeline from the Maths Centre to the teaching profession.
Establishing a Mathematics Faculty at NWU Akanyang Hub. |
