The 13 month project will obtain, model and report on demographic information on every household (Bafokeng and non-Bafokeng) residing on Bafokeng land, as well as in-depth (DHS-style) information from individuals, drawn from a sample study. The sample size is expected to be around 50 000 households in phase one – a full census – and 500 households for phase two, a weighted sample survey, collecting in-depth information, including blood samples and other biometrics.
The survey is to be conducted door-to-door using electronic data-gathering equipment, with more than 90% of fieldworkers drawn for the Bafokeng community itself. To further provide detailed information relating to the education, health, social conditions, household economics, food security, thermal comfort, safety and security perceptions and public services received by a representative sample, as well as their general participation in cultural and associational life. The project will also enumerate all Bafokeng stands, and identify whether they are used for residential, business or institutional purposes (or combinations of these).
Project Aims:
- To identify the number of people and households living on Bafokeng land, and to enumerate their basic demographic details. The census is likely to include around 50 indicators.

Project team was unable to secure the necessary funding for the second phase – PULA Survey 2016 – in time. They have approached the Office of Kgosi, who will support us with funding.
The team recommends that the following changes be made to the project.
1. That the start of the Survey (Instrument, etc.) be moved to January 2017. The rest of the project will move accordingly.
2. That a new milestone be inserted “Census Report”. This is to be received on 12 December from SADC.
